With a recent study finding that over half of the people asked felt that the condition of their smile had impacted their personal relationships or dating life, and 93% of people agreeing that their smile affects their self-confidence when taking photos, it’s fair to say that we’re all looking for ways to achieve a healthy and bright smile.
Teeth whitening is, of course, one way to achieve this, but there are some additional steps you can integrate into your daily routine to maintain a fresh-looking smile.
Maisie Caton-Jonhson, Dental Therapist at Smmmile Leeds, and Private Dentistry Awards Nominee, shares her top tips for whiter teeth.
Reduce your intake of drinks that can cause staining
Drinks such as tea, coffee and red wine can stain your teeth over time. If you don’t want to cut them out completely, the best thing to do is to limit your consumption of these and to ensure you are rinsing your mouth with water after drinking them.
Avoid Over-brushing
You might think that over-brushing your teeth will help remove any surface stains, but brushing too hard over time will strip your teeth of their protective enamel, which is the whiter outer part of the tooth, and could actually make your teeth appear darker in colour. Remember to brush your teeth twice a day with a medium/soft toothbrush, or you may want to invest in an electric toothbrush. Look for one with a pressure sensor, which will let you know when you’re brushing too hard.
Regular hygiene visits
Coming into practice and having your teeth professionally cleaned allows your dental hygienist to remove any plaque buildup and any extrinsic staining that makes your teeth appear darker. This type of staining can only be removed by a dental professional, so it’s important to keep up to date with regular visits will help keep your teeth nice and white.

Hi, I’m Maisie Caton-Johnson, and I’m the Dental Therapist here at Smmmile Leeds.
I’m passionate about helping my patients feel confident about their smiles while making every visit as comfortable and relaxed as possible. I have a special interest in dental hygiene, preventative care, and composite bonding, and I’m proud to work at one of the few clinics able to offer Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), the latest, most gentle way to achieve a truly clean smile.
Alongside my hygiene work, I also support patients with general dentistry and Invisalign treatment journeys, helping them maintain a healthy, beautiful smile from start to finish. For me, it’s all about combining health, confidence, and care, and creating smiles that people love to share.
