How to Protect Your Smile This Festive Season

The festive season is a time to relax, celebrate, and indulge. However, it’s also a time when your teeth can face a little extra stress. From sugary treats to fizzy drinks, the Christmas period brings plenty of risks for your oral health. But don’t worry — with a few simple tips, you can enjoy the festivities while protecting your smile.
1. Be mindful of frequent snacking
Every time you eat, the bacteria in your mouth produce acids that attack your teeth. This is especially true when snacking on sugary foods. Constant grazing throughout the day means your teeth are under continuous acid attack, increasing the risk of tooth decay. To protect your enamel, try to limit how often you snack. If you are indulging in festive treats, enjoy them in one sitting instead of picking at them all day.
2. Watch out for fizzy and acidic drinks
Fizzy drinks, including sparkling wines and sugary sodas, are highly acidic and can wear down tooth enamel, leading to erosion. Over time, this weakens the teeth, making them more prone to sensitivity and decay. To minimise the risk, enjoy these drinks at mealtimes rather than sipping on them throughout the day. Drinking water alongside can help rinse away acids and protect your teeth.
3. Red wine and stains
Red wine is a popular festive choice, but it’s also a common cause of staining. Both natural teeth and composite bonding can be affected, leaving your smile looking less bright. If you do enjoy a glass or two, try rinsing your mouth with water afterwards to reduce staining and avoid brushing your teeth immediately, as your enamel may be temporarily softened.
4. Choose smile-friendly snacks
Not all festive foods are harmful to your teeth. Cheese, for example, is a great choice for a snack between meals. It helps neutralise acids in your mouth and provides calcium to strengthen your enamel. So, when you’re at the cheeseboard, enjoy guilt-free knowing it’s helping to protect your teeth!
5. Be sugar smart
It’s no surprise that sugary foods are everywhere during the festive season, but it’s not just how much sugar you eat that matters — it’s how often. Constant exposure to sugar throughout the day increases the risk of cavities. Instead of snacking on sweets little and often, try to enjoy them in one go. Your teeth will thank you!
